The Next Chapter of Ferguson Family Farm
To our customers, friends, and community,
As many of you know, Lynne Ferguson, the founder of Ferguson Family Farm, died on May 30th. Her death has left an enormous absence in both the farm and the community she spent years building.
For many of you, Ferguson Family Farm has been part of your family for years. Before it became a working farm serving families throughout Maryland and the surrounding region, it started much more simply: with my mom, me, a few chickens, and an idea.
Some of my earliest memories are of raising baby chicks in our basement, where they made an unbelievable mess while we tried to figure out what we were doing. My mom bought me my first little hammer so I could help her build our first chicken coop. I sold our eggs at bagpipe practice, and before long we were showing chickens, raising turkeys, and eventually building the cattle operation that became such an important part of her life.
What started small grew because my mom believed deeply in what she was doing.
She had already reinvented herself more than once before becoming a farmer. She had worked in medicine and later built a successful career in construction, but the idea of having a farm had stayed with her since childhood. Eventually she took that idea seriously enough to build one.
And she never stopped learning.
She researched agriculture, animal husbandry, nutrition, sustainability, and the food system because she wanted to understand not only how to raise food, but how to raise it in a way she believed was better for the animals, the land, and the families who trusted her.
That trust was incredibly important to her.
Looking back through years of her emails, I was reminded that they were rarely just about what she had available for sale. She sent articles, research, warnings, thoughts about nutrition, updates from the farm, and anything else she believed might help the people who bought food from her make better decisions for their families.
Many of you stopped being customers a long time ago. You became her friends and her community.
Since her death, I have also gone back and listened to many of the voicemails she left me while I was living in New York. Most weren't about anything urgent. They were updates about baby turkeys arriving, chicks hatching, or a calf being born. Listening to those messages again reminded me that no matter how many years she spent doing this, she never lost her excitement for it.
Because Lynne was the heart of Ferguson Family Farm, her passing marks a major transition for the farm.
For now, Ferguson Family Farm is pausing regular production, sales, and new orders while we take time to determine what comes next.
We will share updates when we have them. Any future markets, limited availability, preorders, or changes to the farm will be announced through the newsletter and Social Media.
Most importantly, I want to thank you.
Ferguson Family Farm existed because people trusted my mom enough to allow her to do what she loved. You trusted her judgment, you trusted the way she raised her animals, and you trusted her to feed your families.
That allowed a few chickens in a basement to become the life she had dreamed about since she was a little girl.
Whatever comes next, that history—and the community that made it possible—will remain at the center of Ferguson Family Farm.
